‘Mumbles Pier creating Love Stories for over 100 years’
All of us who work at Mumbles Pier have at one time or another been presented with a love story. The story of a marriage which lasted a lifetime, whose eyes first met in the ballroom or the summer romance whose first date was enjoyed at the Amusements.
We love hearing the stories that are presented to us and over the years I myself have had the enjoyment on of hearing one or two. I remember the first one I heard was a couple who must have been in their 70’s who walked into, the then Pavilion Café, looking around they smiled and sat down with cups of tea.
‘Did you know?’ they said in strong Australian accents, ‘We met here over 50 years ago’. They went onto say how they had met at a ballroom dance, shortly after which they married and emigrated over to Australia. Their voices full of nostalgia as they described how they had often thought of what they still considered ‘home’ the Mumbles. The couple went on to reminisce about their life, the life they had spent together, the family they had raised and the enjoyment they felt coming back after all these years to place where they proclaimed ‘It all began!’.
It brings such warmth to think of these stories. Some are filled with happiness and love that lasts, and others recall only fleeting romances which last a summer or two. But all hold a special place in people’s heart. At a time when the news is filled with stories of hate which only cause to fuel the flames of discrimination – as Valentine’s Day approaches – at Mumbles Pier we would like to highlight stories of love and happiness.
